Yes Trent Reznor wrote the original.
Yes its a cover song. But J.R. made it his own. Both songs are equal in their own respect.

This is from the year 1968 at the Grand Ole Opry, where Johnny Cash sung his 1963 hit, "Ring Of fire". The song was written by June Carter, and was originally sung by the Carter Family, but didn't fare even close to as well as Johnny Cash and his version of the song.

Johnny Cash sings Jackson with Miss Piggy
Johnny Cash and June Carter singing "Jackson". Johnny has a nagging cough during this rendition but the chemistry between Johnny and June is great, as always. This aired on September 27th, 1969.
It's the Man in Black... duh!
I Walk the Line was a song sang by Johnny Cash, and the song was originally recorded at Sun Studio on April 2, 1956, . He was going to call it "Because You're Mine", but Carl Perkins thought he should call it "I Walk The Line". The rest is history.

Lyrics.
Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire
CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire

Johhny Cash doin Tom Petty. Better version...Final cut
I would have never guessed, but Louis Armstrong was a guest on the Johnny Cash Show. This and the story about Satchmo and Jimmie Rogers show how diverse musical tastes these men had and once again that music is a great connector.
This is from episode 38, Oct., 28, 1970 and must be one of Satchmo's last performances. He was such a great performer r...

Solitaryman then a video of Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond singing together.Set to Johnny's great cover of Neil's "Solitary Man".
The grey newsreel effect on the video fits perfectly with the old-skool c&w folk feel of Johnny's version.
My tribute and a small addition to Johnny Cash's video hurt. I think you'll like it.
